About the Institute

The scientific history of the Institute goes back to 1921 when—at the initiative of V. A. Steklov—the Institute of Physics and Mathematics was established. After V. A. Steklov's death in 1926 the Institute was given his name. In 1932, the Institute of Physics and Mathematics was divided into two independent Departments, the Mathematics Department headed by Academician I. M. Vinogradov and the Physics Department headed by Academician S. I. Vavilov. On April 28, 1934, at the general meeting of the Division of Mathematical and Natural Sciences of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, a decision was made to transform the Departments of the Steklov Institute of Physics and Mathematics into independent Institutes, the Steklov Mathematical Institute and the Lebedev Physical Institute. Ivan Matveevich Vinogradov and Sergei Ivanovich Vavilov became the Directors of these new founded Institutes.

The Institute is working under scientific, methodological and organizational leadership of the Division of Mathematical Sciences of RAS.

Scientific investigations are carrying out on six programs of the Division of Mathematical Sciences of RAS which cover thirty two subjects. The list of subjects for scientific investigations in Steklov Mathematical Institute of RAS is approved by the Division of Mathematical Sciences of RAS.

Steklov Mathematical Institute is regularly publishing its own journal "Proceedings of the Steklov Institute of Mathematics".

The All-Institute Seminar is working in Steklov Mathematical Institute. The sessions of the seminar take place on the third Thursday of every month at 16 o'clock in the conference hall of the Institute situated on the 9th floor. In this seminar, participants attend lectures and discuss the most interesting results, mostly those obtained by research fellows of Steklov Mathematical Institute. Anyone is welcome to join to the work of this free entrance seminar.
